What are Short Stories About?

10th June 2017
(Short Story)

Indipenned short stories allow independent authors (Indipenned Creators) to demonstrate their writing skills to potential readers. As a writer looking to make your way in independent publishing, you need a way of building a following among those looking for great independently published books. Indipenned short stories puts you in contact with readers who may be previously unaware of your work and help you guide them along a journey that will turn them into passionate fans and may make others aware of your books via the age old method of word-of-mouth.

Indipenned Short StoriesWhen it comes to awareness, perhaps the best thing about Indipenned short stories is that they will appear, at least for short while, on the Indipenned website homepage.  It’s therefore a good idea to give your stories a title that will draw readers in.  In addition to a perhaps fleeting moment on the Indipenned home page, your story, as with all the articles that you post, will be syndicated across the Indipenned social network accounts.  The intention is to give your writing the maximum exposure we can, in order to help you generate the fanbase your books deserve.

One thing to note about publishing short stories online is that you are giving your work away. On the face of it this may not appear to be the best of ideas; however, what you are also doing is speculating to accumulate.  As an independent author forging his or her way in the world of publishing, you need a way of letting readers know what you are all about and how good your work is.  What better way to do this than letting people sample your writing without having to hand over their hard-earned cash?  For someone looking for a new and exciting read,  it takes away the risk of purchasing a dud.

The basic concept here is that you provide a sample of your writing, the reader likes what you do and this leads to something else. This something else may be the purchase of a book or a subscription to receive an email alert when you post more Indipenned articles. Consequently, it is a very good idea to include a call to action with your short story.  This could be a link your creator profile (eg Mel Small) where the reader can purchase a book or a prompt to click the @ symbol (see below) for notifications of your future posts. The former may generate a sale, however building a mailing list will provide you with multiple opportunities to build a relationship with your readers as you navigate your way through the exciting world of independent publishing. When it comes to calls to action there is no right or wrong way. It’s therefore a good idea to try both ways and see what works for you.

If you do go down the route of building your mailing list then you may want to consider serialising your short story across several postings.  This gives a natural prompt for readers to register for a notification when the next chapter of your story is posted. Once your story reaches its conclusion, you can then provide the reader with another prompt to check out more of your writing with a book purchase.  If all goes well, this will result in you building a healthy mailing list and creating a few book sales along the way.

In summary, Indipenned short stories are a great way of helping independent authors to find new readers. They take people along what is called the reader journey.  This starts by generating an initial awareness and ends with you growing a group of devoted readers who are passionate and enthusiastic about your writing to the point they will tell all their friends and colleagues.
